Looking Before Buying a Used Car

One of the things that I have learned about life from my adventures in real estate investing is that it is smart to know the value of things on the market.  It means that if you want to have an idea as to what the value of a property is, you need to look at a lot of properties.

Taking this little nugget of wisdom to heart, when I went looking for a new car, I decided to follow the same advice.  Alright, it was going to be a new car for me, but truly all I can afford is a used one.  So I made a list of places that sold used cars in Fort Worth and planned to visit all of them.  But the goal was to get a feel for prices and not buy a car on the first time out.

After taking a look at the cars, I was beginning to get an idea of what they were worth.  But that wasn’t enough for me.  Instead I thought that I should check out prices elsewhere to see if that made any difference.  I made a visit to check out used cars in Weatherford to get a feeling for the prices.

When I noticed that the prices were similar, I picked out one I liked and bought it.  But I feel much better knowing that I looked before I leaped – I know I paid a good price.

Etiquette for Asking Someone to Help You Move

Toyota accessories

Friends with trucks are very coveted. Almost anyone who has a truck has heard these words before: “Can you help me move?”

But if you plan on asking your truck-owning friend to help you move, be aware that they are probably really tired of being asked for “a little favor” here and there. To make sure you don’t step on any toes, here are a few tips on the proper etiquette.

  • Don’t ask someone you don’t know very well. Unless it’s a good friend of yours, you are probably going to come across as just using them for their truck.
  • Offer more than just gas money. Helping you move also requires their time and, more often than not, a lot of hard work as well. Just offering gas money is an insult. You should also offer dinner during or after the move, a six-pack of their favorite beer (yes, spring for the good stuff!), or perhaps some financial assistance buying the Toyota Tundra parts you know they need. And yes, this is in addition to the gas money!
  • Always say thank you. Yes, even if you pay for their gas, dinner, beer, and/or parts.
  • Be sure to invite them over sometime soon. Remember that bit about not making it seem like you’re just using them? Well, you also need to be sure to invite them over to the new place soon after they help you move. At the very least they ought to be invited to the housewarming party, but a special invitation another night is also in order.

If you follow these simple tips, you’ll greatly reduce your chances of offending someone if you ask them to help you move!

How to Prepare a Car for Storage

If you need to store your car for a period of time then you will want to make sure that you get it ready for storage. Here’s how:

- Find a self storage unit. First you have to figure out where you want to put the car. Check out the self storage facilities in your area and find a good one with high security.

- Wash and clean out the car. You don’t want your car to be filthy when it comes out of storage so don’t put it in there still dirty.

- Remove the car’s battery. You don’t want to leave the battery sitting in the car for a long period of time. If the car will only be stored for a few months then you can leave the battery in the car but do disconnect it.

- Drain the radiator. You should leave the hoses unattached after you do this. This will help you to make sure that no corrosion occurs in storage.

- Get the gas tank ready. It’s bad to leave gas sitting in the car but you don’t want a totally empty tank either. Drain the tank down to about one eighth of a full tank. Add a fuel stabilizer to prevent the gas from going bad. This can be found at an auto store.

- Park the car in storage. Make sure that it’s secure and protected from the weather.

Ford racing parts not just for race cars

Stock Car 2007: Tarumã
Creative Commons License photo credit: SadJr

While recently attending some endurance races in Sebring, FL, I spent a lot of time walking around chatting with the race attendees and viewing an incredible assortment of vehicles that had some major after market work done to them. When you are watching a race that can last as long as 24 hours, there is a lot of time in that day to check things out.

One fellow and I started talking about some of the work he had done on his little Ford Ranger pickup truck. It had an amazing paint job and was plain to see that he had a ton of oem Ford parts that he’d installed throughout the vehicle. Probably the key issue about his truck, and so many others that I observed that day was how clean and pristine they all were.

He really blew me away however, when he opened the engine compartment. The stock motor was barely visible for all of the Ford racing parts he’d installed. When I asked him about street legality, and the philosophy behind his actions, he only had one thing to say:

Ford racing parts are not just for racing cars, my friend!

After hearing him start the engine and rev it a few times, not only could I listen to the difference, but I felt it reverberating throughout my body.

Toyota Lust!

I have been happy with the Matrix for about five years now.  I never expected to want anything else for a long time; I’ve been very happy with my car, and living in the city for the whole of the past five years, we’ve been through some wars together (especially when it comes to double parking, which I just can’t seem to master at all; I try to park in front of open air restaurants so people will help guide me into the space), and I have a lot of affection for the old girl.  She’s pretty dinged up, but she’s still my Matrix.

But now Toyota just came out with the Venza, and it’s like, “Here, Mark.  You’ve been working hard for five years.  You’re upgrading to a slightly bigger apartment, don’t you want a larger, comfier version of your favorite car to upgrade to as well?”  I’ll admit it; I’m listening to the siren song.  It just looks so nice and snazzy and shiny, especially compared to my car (I admitted it, it’s dinged).  I know that I’m a total sucker for Toyota OEM parts, so I’d never buy outside the brand.  Really, it’s just that it’s practically the same car except newer, better, faster, and stronger.  How does that sound like a bad thing?

Tips for Finding Used Cars in Michigan

Finding used cars in Michigan is different than in, say, used cars in Georgia or Texas. Colder, snowier climates offer very different challenges in owning and driving a car than warm-weather climates.

One thing you need to keep in mind when buying used cars for this type of climate is that you need a vehicle that can get around easily in a surprise snow — i.e., 4-wheel drive and good snow tires. You might go to work and the weather is fine, but when you leave for home it’s blizzarding. Therefore if you took the rear wheel drive sports car to work that day, you’re pretty much screwed.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the salts and chemicals that are sprayed on the roads to make them safer to navigate may also be harmful to your car. Before buying a used car, you should always check out the undercarriage for signs of rust and corrosion. This can be particularly dangerous if it gets into your suspension and brake systems. Once the car is yours, be sure to always protect it from corrosion by washing the undercarriage thoroughly at the pressure washer after every snowstorm.

One more thing you’ll want to consider is gas mileage. Of course, by nature the 4-wheel drive vehicles that get around well in the snow are also gas guzzlers, so you’ll have to balance your needs for a snow vehicle with your needs for a car that is good on gas.

Buying a vehicle in Michigan or another snowy climate isn’t all that difficult if you know what to look for. What do you like to see in a good car for driving in the snow?

The realities of motorcycle accident statistics

Becoming an serious motorcycle rider does not happen by accident. In order to ensure your own and others safety when on the road, there are a few simple, but extremely important aspects you’ll want to adhere to.

Understanding that more than half of all motorcycle related accidents happen to riders with less than 5 months experience and nearly 90% of riders are “self taught” should indicate that expert professional instruction is of paramount importance. Taking your time to get the on-road experience after certified training will greatly reduce your chances of being involved in an accident.

With approximately 25% of motorcycle related fatalities happening to riders aged 16 to 25, your relative maturity will come into play as you are out on the road gaining valuable experience.

So, what are some of the best ways to ensure your continued driving success? Here’s a few of our favorites:

  • Be mentally prepared to drive: be alert and stress free
  • Be physically prepared: have the right gear, and wear it appropriately
  • Know your bike: always check your vehicle for leaks, tire pressure, light operation, etc.
  • Be aware of the environment and weather: know the forecast, dress accordingly, and be prepared for the worse
  • Have a strategy before you ride: know how to drive in any given number of potential scenarios

Renting a Car in Cancun

travel-5If you are planning a trip to Cancun, you may want to consider renting a car.  Being free to drive where you want, when you want is a great way to spend your vacation.  When getting a Cancun rental car, it is a good idea to get full coverage insurance.  It does cost extra but it will save you tons of money if you do get into an accident.  It will also save you a lot of hassle, trouble, and time.  The extra coverage is great even if you don’t get into an accident.  It will give you piece of mind and if you happen to chip the windshield or scratch the paint, you’ll be glad that you got the extra policy.  Without the extra insurance, you are liable for thousands of dollars if the rental car is stolen or damaged.

When dealing with rental cars in Cancun, never make assumptions.  Keep in mind that things may not work like they do in the United States.  Remember, you are in a different country.  Double check everything.  Read the policies and insurance information.  If you have any questions or concerns about anything, make sure that you ask.  It is your responsibility to make certain that you understand what you are responsible for when renting a car in Cancun.

Need to fix up my car

I was looking for camry parts so that I could fix my car up lately and I was really lucky that one of my friends told me about toyotapart.com because it made my life so much easier. I am always working at my job and I do not really have any time or interest in doing things like car maintenance. I will take it in for the occasional oil change like you are supposed to do but beyond that I really do not like to do much so the easier it is for me to take care of my car and find the parts it needs when it needs it, then I say that is better for me.

Instead of working on my car, I like to go out to the great outdoors and do things like go camping and hiking. The favorite place I like to go around here is a place that is so secluded and not well known that it does not even have a name I do not think. I call it the waterhole, because it is part of a really pretty creek and the place I like to go has rocks that form a really great place to go and swim and even cliff dive if the water is high enough.

Improve Fuel Economy

Have you ever heard the old tale that increased fuel economy occurred when truck owners lowered their tailgates or added truck accessories? Several teams of researchers have conducted tests to see if the tailgate makes a difference in gas mileage, whether it is up or down. Those test were inconclusive to the effect of the tailgate position, however, there had been suspicions that by adding truck bed covers it could better the fuel economy of the truck.

There have been tests done to prove or disprove this theory and the results are unanimous, adding a tonneau cover to your truck will, in fact, improve the fuel economy of the vehicle. A group of mechanical engineers at the Western New England College in Massachusetts have done testing and research to discover the truth about the effects on fuel economy when adding a tonneau cover. Their trials revealed that one of the best ways to improve gas mileage and reduce drag is to add tonneau covers onto the pickup trucks. A savings of 8% was obtained while they were doing their study using a Dodge Ram for the test.

The bottom line result is that tonneau covers installed on truck boxes has been proven to reduce the aerodynamic drag and ultimately save on fuel and to get better gas mileage.
