Etiquette for Asking Someone to Help You Move
Friends with trucks are very coveted. Almost anyone who has a truck has heard these words before: “Can you help me move?”
But if you plan on asking your truck-owning friend to help you move, be aware that they are probably really tired of being asked for “a little favor” here and there. To make sure you don’t step on any toes, here are a few tips on the proper etiquette.
- Don’t ask someone you don’t know very well. Unless it’s a good friend of yours, you are probably going to come across as just using them for their truck.
- Offer more than just gas money. Helping you move also requires their time and, more often than not, a lot of hard work as well. Just offering gas money is an insult. You should also offer dinner during or after the move, a six-pack of their favorite beer (yes, spring for the good stuff!), or perhaps some financial assistance buying the Toyota Tundra parts you know they need. And yes, this is in addition to the gas money!
- Always say thank you. Yes, even if you pay for their gas, dinner, beer, and/or parts.
- Be sure to invite them over sometime soon. Remember that bit about not making it seem like you’re just using them? Well, you also need to be sure to invite them over to the new place soon after they help you move. At the very least they ought to be invited to the housewarming party, but a special invitation another night is also in order.
If you follow these simple tips, you’ll greatly reduce your chances of offending someone if you ask them to help you move!
